| HOT! Texas can be so hot, but the summer of 1899 in Fentress, Texas, has to be the worst summer yet! It is so hot that even the animals suffer; and while some insects seek shelter, the grasshoppers and fireflies thrive. For Calpurnia Tate, or Callie Vee for short, this awful heat brings her freedom – freedom from six brothers, school, piano lessons, AND her mother’s desire for her to learn the duties of the household and needlework. While spending time at the San Marcos River to cool off, 11-year-old Callie sees a grasshopper different from any she has seen before. This one is yellow instead of green. To satisfy her curiosity about this unusual observation, Callie tries to check out Darwin’s Origin of Species from the public library to learn more. When this is unsuccessful, Callie decides to turn to her distant and unapproachable grandfather for help. When Grandfather gives Callie his copy of Darwin’s book to read, Callie’s interest in science and nature grow, as well as a close and special relationship between the two. Exploring her family’s acres of pecans and cotton, recording her observations of plants and living things in her journal, Callie Vee and her grandfather make their own exciting scientific discovery, while Callie makes a discovery about and for herself. --2011-2012 Golden Sower Award Manual Learn about author, Jacqueline Kelly and check out this book talk! |
