Extra Credit
is my favorite book by Andrew Clements.  The book is about a girl named Abby Carson that is failing sixth grade.  In order to pass, she has to do extra credit.  The extra credit assignment turns out to be finding a pen pal from a foreign country.  She has to do it even though she doesn't like homework.

Her first letter went to a little school in Afghanistan and a boy named Sadeed Bayat.  The people in his village think that it is inappropriate for a boy and a girl to talk to each other so their letter writing and their friendship becomes a growing problem causing things to happen in both places.

I liked that the letters had more of a difference than just going across an ocean, it went across cultures as well.  It is a really good book and you should read it!
