| Jake and Kady Ransom’s parents disappear mysteriously while on an archaeological dig of Mayan artifacts. A few months later the children receive, via mail, a strange coin broken in half, the pieces of which each of them keep with them constantly. Three years later Jake and Kady are invited to view a showing of artifacts from that Mayan archaeological site in the British Museum in London on the day of the summer solstice. While viewing a model of a golden pyramid with a dragon on top, Jake sees a small round area circled by the dragon’s tail. He places the two pieces of their coin in it. They are immediately transported into a strange jungle world, in which there are dangerous dinosaurs and many different cultures of people from throughout the ages. They befriend a Mayan girl named Marika and a Roman boy named Pindor, who take them to the thriving city of Calypso, where descendants of lost cultures try to live cooperatively. Somehow, they all speak the same language. The mysterious and powerful Skull King is trying to destroy the city. Jake and Kady help to fight the Skull King and his supporters. --2011-2012 Golden Sower Award Manual Meet the author, James Rollins and check out the book trailer! |
