Thirteen-year-old Jessica Warner lives with her parents and older brother, Duncan, on Wild Hawk Ranch in Nevada. Jessica loves horses, especially Rusty, a chestnut that she's had since she was three years old, but Rusty is getting old.

Each summer Wild Hawk Ranch bought fifteen wild horses from the Paiute Reservation. With his friends, Gator and Wyatt Lightfoot, Duncan would spend hours skillfully training the horses that would eventually be sold to ranchers and rodeo competitors. Jessica would watch her brother train the horses each summer, and more than anything she wanted to train horses like he did. Would she ever get a chance to do so?

When Jessica sees the wild horses for the first time that summer she spies a beautiful paint filly and she names her Storm Chaser. Can she convince her father that she is old enough to train Storm Chaser? But then an event happens that changes everything.
