Jason is a typical 12-year old boy in every way except for his Autism, which was not diagnosed until he was in the second grade. Told from his point of view, the reader finds himself inside Jason’s thoughts and feelings. Jason knows that each day could end up in some sort of calamity because of things that happen that are out of his control.

Jason is most himself on his computer, writing stories for a website devoted to those who like to write fantasy. There he “meets” someone named Phoenix Bird who really likes his writing and asks for his help with her writing. He is terrified to meet her in person…afraid she will judge him like others do.

--Excerpts from the 2011-2012 Golden Sower Award Manual

After reading, Anything But Typical, I came to the conclusion that there were some parts I liked, but other parts I didn’t. I thought the author did a good job with making this book seem like all of the characters were real, along with the plot. It’s really an accurate reflection of what some people encounter everyday with small triumphs, but also embarrassing mistakes.

I thought writing the story through the eyes of the main character, an autistic boy, seemed to make the book more intriguing and believable. That was a job well done by Nora Raleigh Baskins.

On the same note, there were some things I didn’t like about this book. I felt the author never did come to a proper conclusion. It never does exactly tell you what occurred in the plot at the end.

Also, it was kind of hard for me to follow along because I didn’t care for the book’s style of writing. It seemed like I had to keep rereading certain parts of the book to understand some of the main points. That’s my personal opinion though. I’m sure there are plenty of people that would still enjoy this book.
