Colton’s family heads west with an old horse and some oxen in their covered wagon.  Shortly after leaving, his father deserts the family, leaving them stranded on the trail.

At 13 years of age, Colton gets a job riding for the Pony Express.  To prove himself, he takes off with the mail in a dangerous snow storm only to find himself lost and alone in the mountains.
