Tally lives in a society where everyone is “ugly” until their 16th birthday.  Forced to live with the other Uglies,  she entertains herself by breaking the rules and going to forbidden places like New Pretty Town, where people live after the operation.

Testing the Rope
Tally-Wa tests the rope before going over to New Pretty Town.  She is sneaking over to see her friend Peris, who just turned Pretty.  They had promised to be friends for life.
Tally-Wa goes hover boarding in the Rusty Ruins, the remains of an ancient civilization.  She and Shay (an Ugly friend) both go there seeking adventure before they are turned into Pretties.  This was Tally-Wa’s first trip here and her first time seeing the old rusty roller coaster.
